Murder verdict due

A Suffield women will learn her fate today as the verdict in a second-degree murder case is expected this afternoon in Medicine Hat Court of King’s Bench.

Deborah Belyea was accused of killing her husband, Cypress County Councillor Alf Belyea, on Thanksgiving weekend in 2022, then disposing the body at a rural property near Piapot, Sask.

The two-week judge alone trial concluded on Jan. 18, at which point the justice reserved judgment until Monday.

Coutts Anniversary

RCMP prepared for a sympathetic convoy on Highway’s leading to Coutts border crossing on Saturday to mark the two-year anniversary of the protest.

The week ahead

The Medicine Hat Utility Ratepayers Association will hold a founding meeting on Wednesday, 6 p.m. at Higdon Hall.

The group held a price protest meeting in August and stated in December that it would formalize its structure to press for tax and rate changes.

The Alberta NDP will host a local meeting Thursday to discuss the province’s exploration of creating an Alberta Pension Plan.

City Council’s energy committee will also meet Thursday for the first time in 2024.

Tigers pickup three points over Moose Jaw

The Medicine Hat Tigers held their own against the Moose Jaw Warriors. A 6-5 shootout loss Friday at Moose Jaw was followed up with a 5-3 comeback win Saturday at Co-op Place. Friday’s game story can be found here and Saturday’s here.

Medicine Hat donned blue and yellow SpongeBob Squarepants jerseys Saturday as part of Nickelodeon Night for Children’s Miracle Network. Those jerseys are being auctioned off with proceeds going towards the Children’s Miracle Network. The auction closes Tuesday at 7 p.m. and can be found here.

The Tigers (28-14-3-1) are off until a road weekend kicks off Friday when they head to Saskatoon to face the WHL leading Blades and battle the Prince Albert Raiders on Saturday.
