MHPS warn drivers that Holiday Season is also check stop season

By MEDICINE HAT NEWS on December 9, 2023.

The Medicine Hat Police Service is once again reminding drivers to plan ahead to ensure a safe ride home this Holiday Season.

Some of the check stops will be advertised, including one held this weekend and one on Dec. 15, while others will not. Check stops will be conducted at various times through the day.

Drivers are also reminded of new impaired driving legislation that came into effect in 2018, including the introduction of mandatory alcohol screening. When entering a check stop drivers will be required to provide a sample of breath.

The device provides an immediate reading and drivers who pass will continue on their way. Police say the goal is to provide minimal disruption to motorists while enhancing the safety of the roadways.

In 2022, MHPS charged 376 drivers under the Immediate Roadside Sanction Program. As of Dec. 7, 330 drivers have been charged under the program in 2023.

Anyone suspecting someone of driving under the influence is asked to call 911.
