The Alberta Party board of directors says it is committed to the party and will seek a new president and leader early in the new year.
Barry Morishita stepped down in October after two years at the head of the party, and a release Friday states party president Sid Kobewka has also resigned.
Morishita, a former Brooks mayor, placed third last spring in his second attempt to beat UCP leader Danielle Smith in the Brooks-Medicine Hat riding.
The party statement this week called that decision by Morishita to run in his home riding principled, and thanked him for two years hard work to bolster the party.
“Barry’s principled approach coupled with his unfailing integrity demonstrated a different way to do things,” said party vice-president Janet Jabush. “He focused on solutions to the issues facing Albertans and we are better for having been served by Barry’s leadership.”
New board elections and discussions on determining a leader will take place at the party’s AGM in the new year.
“The Alberta Party remains committed to advancing the causes of respectful political discourse, prudent fiscal management and inclusive social responsibility,” the statement concludes.
