Two local charity groups are joining forces to advance their outreach efforts, starting with a fundraising concert next month.

CARO and the Medicine Hat and Area Refugee Assistance Team (MHART) will jointly stage a children’s concert on the afternoon of Nov. 18 at Fifth Avenue Memorial Church.

Rev. Nancy Cocks, who co-founded MHART, is the new CARO board chair.

She said in a release the two entities align with a commitment to help vulnerable families and channel the generosity of Hatters to those in extreme need.

“Our networks have new opportunities to make a difference in these challenging times,” she said.

MHART formed in 2015 in response to the refugee crisis from the Syrian civil war. It is currently in its third campaign, which lends support to six South Sudanese refugees who will join family already in Medicine Hat.

CARO (Canadians Reaching Out for the World’s Children) has operated for more that 20 years and has the current goal of raising $20,000 by year end to support an orphanage in the west African nation of Burkina Faso.

CARO vice-president Bob Wanner said the local group has a long relationship with the orphanage that provides care, education and local employment in its area.

“The benefits multiply,” said Wanner.

The “Caring Hearts” concert on Nov. 18 will feature young local performers in a music and dance program from 2-4 p.m. Tax receipts will be issued for donation amounts of $25 or more.
