Unemployment in southern Alberta remains well above levels seen last fall, according to analysis by the province’s Ministry of Jobs.
The jobless rate in the Lethbridge-Medicine Hat economic region sat at 6.0 per cent in September, down slightly from August, but nearly double the rate of 3.2 per cent in the early fall of 2022.
That comes after Statistics Canada reported earlier this month that the provincial unemployment rate edged higher to 5.7 per cent, just above the national average of 5.5 per cent.
Across the province, the year-over-year comparison sees rates rise in five of seven economic regions, including Calgary and Edmonton (both now at 6 per cent). Unemployment was highest in Red Deer (6.7 per cent) and lowest in parts of east-central Alberta (3.7 per cent).
