A local “eclipse hunter” has produced a photo array that shows the progress of the moon passing in front of the sun as seen in southeastern Alberta last weekend.

Lukas Gornisiewicz has photographed 11 solar eclipses in nine different countries over the years and spent the morning photographing the partial eclipse on Oct. 14 on the shore of Elkwater Lake.

The eclipse was most pronounced, leading to total darkness, on a band running diagonally across the southern United States on Saturday morning, but the effect was partially visible into parts of Alberta.

Gornisiewicz says the next total eclipse at Medicine Hat is due in August 2044, though a partial eclipse will be visible here next April.

The next total eclipse will involve portions of northern Mexico next summer.

“I’ll be in Texas for that,” he told the News.

Specific to the recent montage, pictures were taken every five to 10 minutes over two hours, Gornisiewicz chronicled the journey with a Cannon 60D camera body, a 500mm F/8 lens fitted with a specialized filter.
