A motion regarding purchasing three stained glass windows was tabled after a lengthy discussion during the Sept. 12 meeting of the Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education. The motion was back on the agenda this and was passed with one trustee voting against.

The total cost of the windows is $51,000, not including installation, and Weissmann Glassworks will be completing the project. An initial deposit of $10,000 is required and the rest is due upon completion. As the windows are for a new school, they will not be required until construction on the building is complete, and the contractor has agreed to store them for MHCBE until they can be installed.

The initial motion was tabled in September as administration hadn’t decided where the money was going to come from for the deposit. On Tuesday, trustees were told the $10,000 will come from the portion of the International Education funds that has been earmarked for new build projects. The remainder of the cost will be covered by fundraising.

Trustee Dick Mastel asked in September if the windows would be interior or exterior. Superintendent Dwayne Zarichny responded that Weissmann had indicated that if MHCBE wanted the windows visible from the outside of the building, it would be best to hang them inside in front of an existing window. The contractor doesn’t recommend incorporating them into the building structure as it would become a significantly different project than the one proposed.
