Police contracts reached in Calgary and Edmonton comparable to Medicine Hat

Contracts with the two largest police unions in the province are now in place, according to a summary of collective bargaining published by the province.

It states that in August, 2,000 members of the City of Calgary Police Association agreed to a three-year deal, including raises totalling eight per cent, which was largely retroactive and expires in early 2024.

In the spring, 1,900 members of the Edmonton Police Association earned raises of seven per cent as they only brought their contract up to date after three years of talks.

Last February, about 115 members of the Medicine Hat Police Association and city council ratified a four-year-deal with raises of 10 per cent that updated the collective agreement until the end of 2024.

The result is a first-class constable in Medicine Hat will earn $54.32 per hour in 2023 – the same level as an officer in Edmonton – and compared to $54.13 in Calgary. The comparable rate in Lethbridge is $54.60.

Unrelated to officer pay, commissioners who assist the Lethbridge Police Department won $1 to $2 per hour raises in a new union contract negotiated by the Teamsters No. 362 and ratified Sept. 5. That three-year deal, covering 15 members of the Canadian Corps. of Commissionaires, also includes annual raises of two and 2.5 per cent in a pact that concludes in late 2025.
