A pair of local bellydancers recently brought their talents all the way down to sunny California.
Krista Vandermeulen and Lindsay Perry, owners of Medicine Hat’s Tone Bellydance, performed at the Cairo ShimmyQuake convention in Glendale.
CSQ draws “hundreds of dancers from around the world to participate in workshops led by industry ‘masters’, shop specialty vendors, watch festival performances, attend evening galas and more,” reads a release from Tone Bellydance.
Vandermeulen and Perry took part in more than 12 hours worth of workshops, many of which were taught by some of their favourite artists.
“I was a bit star struck to even be in the same room as Sadie Marquardt,” Perry says in the release. “But once we got to drilling and layering different movements … it just felt like home with women moving, dancing, laughing and learning together.”
“All of the professionals we encountered left us feeling both affirmed in our own abilities and excited that we are able to continually learn more,” said Vandermeulen, who also created an original choreography which was performed at CSQ.
“Any time we are on a stage outside of Canada in front of our peers is a bit nerve wracking,” said Perry. “But our style of bellydance was received very, very well with people saying we are energetic and unique.”
