Alberta Health Services is warning to avoid contact with algae blooms at Reesor Lake in Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park.

Cyanobacteria, or “blue-green algae,” can cause skin-rash, sore throat, fever, nausea and vomiting for people and pets who come into contact or ingest it. Boiling contaminated water does not reduce these risks.

On July 12, AHS reported that blooms were found in the lake in the upper portion of the hills, and says water from the lake should not be used cooking, drinking, or given to pets or livestock.

Swimming or wading near blooms should be avoided, and any contact should be followed by thorough washing with another source of water.

Fish from the lake are considered fit for human consumption, but should not be given to pets, including heads of entrails.

Recreational activity is not prohibited where blooms are not present, but the advisory is in place for the entire lake.
