A Medicine Hat man accused of continuing to spread anti-Semitic propaganda despite a court order and sentencing conditions has a new lawyer, but his hearing early next month could be delayed, Medicine Hat Court of Justice heard Thursday.

Loki Holger Hulgaard was sentenced to house arrest and to take part in therapy as part of his probation conditions after pleading guilty to spreading hateful material against people of the Jewish faith in late 2020.

Probation officers charged him in July 2021 after an online search and physical search of his home allegedly revealed he had not, as ordered by the court, removed an online manifesto he had written, and was stockpiling hate literature.

The two-year-old matter has been delayed as Hulgaard has arranged his defence, most recently parting ways with Calgary defence attorney Naveed Anwar in the spring.

New defence attorney Greg White came on the record last week, but has other serious trial matters scheduled to take place in the first week of August overlapping with a hearing set for Hulgaard.

White told court on Thursday that he was engaged last week and a required an adjournment until July 11 to discuss the case with his client and potentially request a scheduling change.

An initial hearing date in December 2022 was vacated when Hulgaard made changes on his legal team.

If convicted, the court could revisit the original sentence of four months of house arrest followed by eight months of curfew, then two year’s probation.

The charge of promoting hatred has a maximum penalty of two years in prison.
