Medicine Hat’s former city manager is set to leave the same job in Grande Prairie, where Bob Nicolay departed following a split with city hall here.

Nicolay was the chief administrative officer in Medicine Hat in the 1990s and returned in late 2018 to resume the role.

He left the position in Medicine Hat in January 2022, about eight months ahead of schedule, stating his desire to speed up a planned retirement and council’s wish to change priorities following the municipal election in late 2021.

A month later Nicolay was announced as the interim city manager in Grande Prairie, where he had worked for several years prior to his return to Medicine Hat. At the time, the position was described as helping to guide that city through the process of hiring a new permanent top administrator.

On Monday, Grande Prairie city hall announced Shane Bourke, a former Grande Prairie finance director, as its permanent city manager, and thanked Nicolay for his service. His final day on the job will be June 30.

That city is in the process of creating its own municipal police force.
