YIELD group coming to drag strip for traffic safety event with youth

By Medicine Hat News on June 6, 2023.

The Youth Initiatives and Education in Lifestyles and Driving Association will be down at the strip June 16 for the Medicine Hat Drag Racing Association’s Friday Night Street Legal event, hoping to share knowledge about traffic safety with the city’s younger drivers.

“We are bringing two cars, a 2000 Camaro and a 1989 Mustang, all decaled up as RCMP patrol cars, both were used back in the day as highway patrol cars,” YIELD president Gord Buck says in a recent MPDRA release. “First of all, we get the attention of our audience with the cars.”

Vehicle collisions are the third-leading cause of death among 15-to-24-year-olds in Canada, while drivers under 25 are the most likely to be distracted at the wheel in fatal crashes, reads the release.

YIELD will also be inviting those in attendance to try out its driving simulator, which shows the hazards of driving at high speeds, braking and distracted driving.

Gates open at 4 p.m. for racers and 5 p.m. for fans on Friday, June 16, with racing to follow at 7 p.m.
