reporter@medicinehatnews.com On Thursday, Toonies 4 the Games took place across all three school districts in the Medicine Hat region. Students were asked to bring a toonie to school to support the 2026 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games. It is also hoped the fundraiser will spread awareness of the games amongst the students, staff and parents of the schools. The initiative also ran in 2022 and will continue through until 2026 on the first Thursday of May each year. The Medicine Hat Public School District, Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education, Prairie Rose School Division and CAPE School all participated in Toonies 4 the Games again this year. While individually, a toonie is a small commitment, it is still a positive action and collectively can raise significant funds for the games. In 2022, Toonies 4 the Games raised close to $6,000. Medicine Hat has been approved by Special Olympics Canada as the host city of the 2026 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games. The games will take place from Aug. 11-15, 2026 and more than 1,200 athletes are expected to attend. Estimated budget for the games is $2.6 million and the organization expects to raise $100,000 with fundraisers such as Toonies 4 the Games. 6
