Medicine Hat’s Heritage Pavilion is reopening for public use and reservations beginning May 1, the city announced during Monday’s meeting of the public services committee.

Established by the city in 1983, the Heritage Pavilion is a building located in Strathcona Island Park which boasts two floors, an outdoor balcony and a below-balcony deck space, as well as a small pond, once used for boating in the summer and skating in the winter.

Previously available for public use and reservations, the Heritage Pavilion was temporarily closed after sustaining damage in the 2013 flood. After undergoing repairs, it reopened, but only as a training facility for city staff.

“Although the facility has served the city well for this purpose, it has not been highly utilized,” city interim managing director Brian Stauth said. “City council made the inquiry about opening up the facility for public bookings, and it was decided to move forward with public access so families and other user groups could book the facility for events.”

Having already received numerous inquiries from community members, Stauth expects the pavilion will be well-utilized as a public booking space – an expectation public services committee members appeared to share.

Bookings for the pavilion will be carried out by the city’s parks and recreation department once May arrives.

For more information on bookings, visit the city’s parks and recreation webpage or call 403-529-8333.
