Local country music star MacKenzie Porter was recognized Sunday evening during the CMT Music Awards as a nominee for Breakthrough Female Video of the Year.

Porter, who last year was nominated for Collaborative Video of the Year alongside U.S. country singer Dustin Lynch, was thrilled to receive her first solo nomination earlier this month for ‘Pickup.’

Fellow nominees included Avery Anna, Kylie Morgan, Tiera Kennedy, Morgan Wade and Megan Moroney.

While it was Moroney who took the award, Porter says she was thrilled to have been considered, and is grateful to all her supporters in Medicine Hat and elsewhere.

“This nomination means absolutely everything to me,” Porter told the News on Monday. “I make music to hopefully make other people feel something, to feel good when they hear me on the radio (or) pumped up when they put my song while driving or getting ready to go out.

“I’m so lucky I have so many amazing people supporting me and showing me love when they vote for me for this sort of award show.”

In addition to her most recent CMT nomination, Porter is also celebrating earning her first U.S. Billboard No. 1 for her and Lynch’s ‘Thinking ‘Bout You,’ which occupied the top spot on the Country Airplay chart for six weeks in 2022.

The song also earned the distinction of being the longest-running single to occupy a spot in the top 10, at 28 weeks.

Porter, who is working on new music, says she is determined to keep showcasing the talent of Canadian country musicians.

“I’m going to keep working my butt off to make my hometown and Canada proud and represent them through country music,” she said.
