Local chef competing on Food Network’s Fire Masters

A Medicine Hat chef is turning up the heat as a competitor on the upcoming season of Fire Masters, airing on Canada’s Food Network on Apr. 16.

Sourav Saha, owner of Rosewood Bistro and operator of the Clubhouse Restaurant at Paradise Valley Golf Course, is one of 30 chefs specializing in open-flame cooking who will compete in the show’s third season for a chance to win $10,000 and the title of Fire Master.

Each episode, three chefs go head-to-head in a series of culinary challenges where their goal is to create the best dish possible while battling time limitations and other obstacles.

The chefs present their completed dishes to a panel of judges for review. The chef with the least impressive dish is sent home at the end of each round until only one chef remains.

In the final round, the remaining chef goes up against one of the panel judges for a chance to win the grand prize.

“It was very exciting,” Saha told the News while reflecting on his experience as a competitor. “This is the first time I’ve been on TV … I am very happy that I went for it, and I totally enjoyed every moment.”

Though Saha’s season of the show will be airing for the first time in Canada in April, it was filmed a while ago and has already aired in the U.S. on the Cooking Channel.

Nevertheless, Saha is excited for it to be broadcast in Canada, so he can share his participation with his local family, friends and supporters.

While Saha isn’t able to share the outcome, he did say the experience comprised a mixture of excitement, nervousness, fun and exhaustion, both mentally and physically.

“We started around 6:45 a.m., and by the time I left the (filming space), it was almost 12 hours and a half hours,” said Saha. “But (the competition) was pretty easy. The only challenge thing was the time. In a blink of an eye, 30 minutes was over.”

Having been taught open-flame cooking by his grandmother at a young age, Saha says the competition was a great opportunity to hone his skills and get feedback from culinary experts, as well as shine the light on Medicine Hat and the culinary talent which can be found in the city.

“It was a really good experience, and I would encourage all chefs to go for competitions like this,” said Saha. “I feel really happy that I can represent Medicine Hat because I think Medicine Hat has got a very good potential of being a food hotspot in the prairies. We’re not one of the bigger cities like Calgary or Edmonton, but I think Medicine Hat has got really good food.”

Fire Masters makes its Canadian debut Apr. 16 on Food Network, but can also be accessed via STACKTV. Saha will be featured in the May 14 episode.
