Local man faces several weapons-related charges after incident in Crescent Heights on Sunday

A Medicine Hat man is in custody facing numerous weapons and driving charges following an incident which took place in the area of 20th Street and 7th Avenue NE at approximately 8 p.m. Sunday.

Police were called to a strip mall in the area after receiving reports of a man acting reckless and threatening.

The man is alleged to have driven recklessly to the strip mall, then, upon arrival, entered a store and confronted a customer in a threatening manner. When the customer left the store, the man is alleged to have followed them into the parking lot and continued to act belligerent to them and other bystanders. While doing so, the man reportedly flashed his waistband and showed what appeared to be a rifle.

When police arrived, they apprehended the suspect without incident and seized a loaded, sawed-off, 22-calibre rifle from his waistband.

The man, whose name has not been released, is charged with possessing a weapon contrary to a (weapons prohibition) order, possession of a firearm in a vehicle, contravention of firearms regulations, possession of a restricted/prohibited weapon, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public, possession of a loaded prohibited/restricted firearm, assault with a weapon, carrying a concealed weapon and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

The man is awaiting a bail hearing.
