City campgrounds filling up for when Jehovah’s Witnesses converge in June

Space at municipal campgrounds is already at a premium over two weekends in June, about three months before the city will host a major religious conference at Co-op Place.

The city will welcome about 8,500 attendees to the Jehovah Witness event that month, organizers said this week, while outlining that accommodation industries such as hotels and restaurants will see a surge in business.

A search of available space at Gas City Campground through the City of Medicine Hat’s online registration system shows 74 of the 86 available stalls are reserved for the June 16 weekend.

Only five spots remain unclaimed the next weekend, when the second of two three-day events take place.

Gas City Campground will open for the season April 28, but reservations began being taken for the 2023 season in early February.

Alberta Parks allows sites to be booked 90 days in advance, meaning dates up to mid-June can now be secured.

Saskatchewan’s online registration is set to open April 3, but in phases that include Saskatchewan Landing that day and Cypress Hills on April 12.
