Unemployment in Medicine Hat-Lethbridge corridor rose by half a percentage point compared to earlier this year, but remains lower than the provincial figure and much less than this time last year, according to recently released data.

Province-wide statistics were released March 10, but a regional breakdown offered by Alberta’s Jobs ministry from the weekend shows the regional rate rose to 4.2 per cent in February.

That is the lowest of any region in Alberta, though up from 3.7 per cent in January for southern Alberta. The rate was 6.6 per cent in February 2022.

Each economic region aside from Fort McMurray-Wood Buffalo saw a slight uptick in jobless numbers in the month-to-month analysis.

The current unemployment rate across the province is 5.8 per cent, as Alberta saw a gain of about 1,500 positions from the previous month. The national rate was 5.0 per cent.
