RCMP warn of jewelry and electronics scam travelling through

By Medicine Hat News on March 15, 2023.

Mounties in southern Alberta are warning the public of groups travelling through the region conducting gold jewelry and electronic scams.

They say suspects have been approaching citizens at gas stations, in parking lots and in other public settings.

Typically, people are being offered fake gold jewelry for sale, as gifts or in a trade for gasoline. They are also said to be selling electronics. Reports suggest the suspects provide a false story about a broken or lost bank card, leaving them unable to access their personal funds to continue their trip.

The suspects have been seen driving newer rental vehicles and, sometimes, being accompanied by children. The incidents, which are considered criminal in nature by police, occurred between March 2 and 14.

Police ask the public to be aware of fraudulent scams and to report any further incidents.
