The rights to take over the government liquor sales permit in Swift Current sold for about $1.5 million at auction in February, according to the Saskatchewan Gaming and Liquor Authority.

That doesn’t include buildings, fixtures or stock of the SGLA, which is exiting liquor retailing after the move was announced last fall by the provincial government.

In total the SGLA auction raised $45.1 million in auctions in February to disperse 34 remaining store permits.

Specific to Swift Current, the auction on Feb. 17 involved 11 parties and a total of 95 bids. The permit was secured for a winning bid of $1.456 million by an unnamed bidder.

The highest winning bid was related to LaRonge ($3.27 million), while the lowest was for Carylye ($450,000).

Auction winners have 18 months to secure operating permits, locations and begin operations.

All SGLA-operated stores will be permanently closed by March 11.
