Being present when a Medicine Hat golfer tried to buy back his own stolen clubs earned a Cypress County man a one-year probationary sentence in Provincial Court on Tuesday.

Court heard the owner noticed his clubs and bag, valued at $1,000, were missing last fall and then saw them for sale on an internet buyer-seller website for a price of $250.

He notified police, who sent officers to arrest two men at a setup meeting with the seller.

“It appears to be a fairly unsophisticated scheme,” said Crown prosecutor Connor Doyle, who said it is difficult to determine who committed the theft, but two men are charged with trafficking stolen goods.

Matters for the other accused man are still before the court.

The lawyer for one man told court Tuesday his client has no previous criminal record and will enter an early guilty plea after reaching an agreement with prosecutors.

That could result in a conditional discharge should he complete probation, attending counselling and perform community service term.

“My client was suspicious of where the golf clubs came from, but realizes that he should have asked more questions,” said defence attorney Eric Nelson-Addy.

The 23-year-old man who works as a part-time drywall installer, was also required to pay $105 toward restitution for minor items missing from the bag.
