A crash involving three semi trucks which killed one person on Friday morning diverted traffic off the Trans-Canada Highway and through the City of Chestermere, Mounties reported.

The RCMP Detachment in Strathmore says police were called to a major collision near the town on the outskirts of Calgary at 3 a.m. on Jan. 20. A tractor trailer carrying herbicide had apparently collided with two other transport trucks that were parked on the side of the highway. One person was declared dead at the scene, while fire, ambulance, police and highway maintenance crews responded to the crash. Authorities closed both westbound lanes of the highway at Range Road 282, knows as Paradise Road. That intersection is the final curve before the Trans-Canada heads straight west toward Calgary city limits.

At 10 a.m., Mounties said investigators were still on scene as were officials with Alberta Environment to oversee cleanup of spilled chemicals.
