Capital Power has shored up power sales from its recently completed “Clydesdale Solar” facility near Enchant, Alta. with a power purchase agreement with Shaw Communications.

Half the power at the 75-megawatt capacity solar field was locked in by Labatt Breweries in April 2021, spurring a name change from “Enchant Solar” to align with the Budweiser Beer effort to use all renewable power in production.

On Tuesday, Edmonton-based Capital Power announced it had entered a 15-year agreement with Calgary-based Shaw for 30 megawatts of the remaining capacity. That equates to about 40 per cent of the facility’s capacity, and includes the related carbon offset credits.

The electricity goes onto the Alberta grid to offset power produced elsewhere to run Shaw’s telecommunications operation.

“Shaw is committed to efficiency and innovation that supports the transition to a low-carbon economy,” said Zoran Stakic, Shaw’s chief operating officer.

Capital states in the release that Clydesdale was completed as scheduled and began commercial operations on Dec. 13, 2022.
