A ranking of the top 50 cities for international students across Canada was published in December by clevercanadian.ca. Medicine Hat ended up 22. The focus was to locate cities best for a productive and fulfilling student life. The six indicators were: diversity, annual percentage of graduates, monthly rent cost, average tuition cost, internet speed and living expense. Top billing went to Sherbrooke, Que. Calgary took third and Edmonton fifth. Medicine Hat did poorly on annual per cent of graduates, which is only 20.23%. Sherbrooke boasts 49.2%. The cost of rent is low in Medicine Hat – averaging $873 per month – and tuition is reasonable compared to other cities, about $4,539. Living expenses – food, household items, phone bill, etc – about $1,196 per month, is somewhat higher than in other cities. For example, living expenses in Sherbrooke were estimated to be $798. Another category Medicine Hat didn’t do well in was diversity, or percentage of ethnic groups, 4.26% compared to 31.7% in Sherbrooke. The comments section was brief, stating Medicine Hat boasts a low cost of living, affordable housing and a good school system, also adding that for most students, it’s a fantastic place to learn. 7
