A trial date that was held for a Medicine Hat man accused of continuing to spread hatred against Jews has passed though new dates may be set in January.

Loki Holger Hulgaard told court last month that he had split with his previous attorney and was seeking new representation.

That was recorded, but judge also ruled that the rapidly approaching Dec. 15 trial date would be held and would proceed unless a new attorney could argue otherwise.

On Thursday in Medicine Hat Provincial Court, the man’s new lawyer, Calgary-based Naveed Anwar, asked for an adjournment until next month so he could acquire and the Crown’s case against his new client.

Crown Prosecutor Heather Morris, from the Calgary specialized prosecutions office, had no objection to the delay, but informed the court that her office complied with a previous court order to provide disclosure directly to the defendant.

Hulgaard was charged with contravening conditions of his criminal sentence laid down after he pleaded guilty in late 2020 to passing currency with anti-Semitic statements and a reduced number of weapons charges.

He was sentenced to undergo intensive counselling while under house arrest and then one year probation. During that period, probation officers allege they seized hate literature from his home and Hulgaard contravened a requirement to remove a racist manifesto from the internet.
