The town of Cabri, Sask., a demolition contractor and a landowner have been fined for illegally burning construction waste, that province announced on Thursday.

The penalty stems from an Environmental Protection Order issued after conservation officers received a tip last February on the “Report-a-Poacher” line that refuse from house demolition in Cabri was being hauled to a rural property and burned.

A release Wednesday from the provincial government states the town, which owned four of the five homes in question, along with Swift Current-based contractor Knutson Excavating, will each pay $21,000 for contravening waste management regulations, specifically not having proper permits.

The owner of the fifth house, as well as the rural property site, Lindsey Kelsey, will pay $9,000.

The Environmental Protection Order also includes requirements to remediate contamination at the burn site, which has occurred, according to the release.

The parties plead guilty at an Oct. 4 hearing. Fine proceeds will be paid into the province’s “Impacted Sites Fund,” which pays to clean up abandoned environmental sites.
