Brooks and region sees crime uptick over 2021

Crime is up in Brooks compared to 2021, according to new statistics for the first 10 months of the year presented to the County of Newell and City of Brooks this week.

The RCMP detachment centred in Brooks reports an overall increase of 14 per cent in total criminal offences reported this year, after numbers generally fell in 2020 and 2021.

That rise includes a sleight increase in crimes to persons, but a near one-third increase in property offences, while all other types of criminal code investigations fell by eight per cent.

The trend also shows up in the number of break and enters, which fell in the city but rose in the surrounding county.

In actual numbers, five more fuel thefts over 10 months translated to a 14 per cent increase, and 37 more thefts in general saw the increase of 29 per cent.
