Leader, Sask. to get new fibre-optic connections

Leader, Sask. is among new list of communities scheduled to be provided with new rural fibre-optic connections in the next two years, according to a release from SaskTel on Tuesday.

The Crown corporation will add $100 million to complete the fifth phase of the infiNET service delivery expansion, involving 34 locations announced this week, and another 46 unnamed municipalities expected in the final phase.

Also listed in SaskTel’s announcement on Tuesday were Eston and Herbert in the larger southwest region.

Maple Creek and Shaunavon were among early round locations, and Gull Lake was added last year. Those locations are now seeing construction.

In 2020 SaskTel said it planned to offer the service to an additional 110,000 residents in 130 rural communities by 2025, making them fibre ready with a $200,000 million expansion.
