Cypress County solar play delayed months over supply issues

The completion of a solar power facility north east of Medicine Hat has been delayed by several months due to supply chain issues.

Elemental Energy is building the Chappice Lake Solar facility near Bowmanton, 35 km from the city, in Cypress County. This week the Alberta Utility Commission approved a time extension for construction, which was originally required to be complete by Dec. 1.

Due to the late arrival of shipments this summer, the company says, several more weeks is required. It applied and was granted a June 2023 in-service date to accommodate any more unforeseen issues.

The plant will comprise panel arrays capable of producing 15 megawatts of power in peak conditions spread over one quarter-section of land with a battery storage unit attached.
