SaskPower will add 700 megawatts of renewable power production to its system located in the south-central region of that province by 2027.

That would entail 400-megawatts of wind and 300 solar, according to a release from the Crown power producer on Nov. 7.

Saskatchewan has previously called for private-sector proposals to build and operate renewable power facilities to help reduce carbon dioxide emissions in its power supply.

A release states the new additions will help reduce CO2 production to half of 2005 levels over the next eight years.

This summer, SaskPower connected 475 megawatts of green power production to the grid, including major wind farms near Assiniboia and Herbert.

Area wheat reps

Two positions for southern Alberta on the Alberta Wheat Commission board have been filled by acclamation, but three others remain empty, the group announced this week.

Director Dean Hubbard of Claresholm and regional representative Gary Stanford of Magrath will return to represent Region 1 after nominations were accepted Nov. 9. One director position and two more regional rep positions are still vacant and can be filled via nominations at the Region 1 meeting Nov. 15 at Lethbridge.

Coffee union

The United Steelworkers have reapplied to unionize a single Starbucks location in Lethbridge after a vote to certify five outlets at once last summer failed when a vote by workers resulted in a tie.

The union represents employees of the coffee chain at specific locations in Sherwood Park and Calgary. On Nov. 1, USW applied to become the bargaining agent for 24 workers at the Starbucks at 550 University Dr. in Lethbridge.
