Community members are coming together to share food and culture at Unisphere Global Centre’s Taste of Cultures event, taking place from 1-3 p.m. Nov. 26 at the Veiner Centre.

Featuring an array of foods from around the world, the festival offers Hatters a chance to expand both their palate and worldview, says Unisphere Global Centre chair Shalla Shaharyar.

“Unisphere Global Centre is a nonprofit organization and one of its mandates is to promote diversity,” Shaharyar told the News. “We advocate for promoting diversity and creating opportunities for engagement as, I think, we absolutely need it.

“We’ve absolutely noticed that there’s a demographic change in Medicine Hat. And this is a way to acknowledge it and create a platform for people to come, engage, connect and get to know one another.”

Community members from more than 20 cultures will be at the event and will be sharing snacks unique to their culture. As well, they will be speaking on cultural traditions and answering questions about their culture.

Admission to the event is free, but snacks are for purchase.

While the upcoming event is the first of its kind to be organized by Unisphere Global Centre, the organization has hosted similar events in the past, focused on strengthening diversity within the community.

“We like to combine having fun and getting to know one another better into events,” said Shaharyar. “And that’s what we’ve done with this (Taste of Cultures) event.”
