Halloween Q&A with experts

A group of little experts helped the News get in the spooky spirit by sharing their thoughts on Halloween.

The News: Why do we carve pumpkins at Halloween?

Avery (Grade 2): Because then you can have roasted pumpkin seeds.

Aiden (Grade 2): Because they’re outside decorations that don’t get blown away by the wind.

The News: Why do we dress up in costumes?

Jude (Grade 2): To look creepy and cool. And also, if you see a wild animal but you’re in scary costume, it might go ‘EEEEK!’ *pretends to run away*

Abby (Grade 1): Because you can look scary so when people see you they will run away and drop their candy. And then you get more candy.

Maddie (Grade 2): In the olden day, people would (dress up) because they thought the dead people would rise up, so they wanted to look scary too (to blend in). I saw it on TV.

The News: Why do people give out treats at Halloween?

Abby (Grade 1): People give out candy to be nice.

Aiden (Grade 2): So you have more stuff to eat after your supper.

Ellie (Grade 1): So you can get a lot of treats. Last year, I got 1 million!

The News: Why do we say ‘trick or treat’ when we knock on someone’s door?

Abby (Grade 1): You say that cause you want candy, but after you say ‘trick or treat,’ you have to say ‘thank you.’

Vance (Grade 1): So they know you’re at the door.

The News: How do you know when it’s time to stop trick or treating and go home?

Abby (Grade 1): Your arms will get tired and you will feel that your bag gets heavy.

Jackson (Grade 1): Never. I’m just going to have two bags of candy and I’m going to have a wagon to (carry them with).

Aiden (Grade 2): When me and my sister have 106 candies in our bags.

Vance (Grade 1): When it’s bedtime.

The News: What’s your favourite treat to get on Halloween?

Jackson (Grade 1): My favourite treat is KitKat and tomato (ketchup) chips. I don’t like tomatoes but I like things that have tomatoes (in them), like tomato chips. But I don’t really know why I don’t like tomatoes, if I like things that have tomatoes (in them)? *shrugs*

Jude (Grade 2): All of them, except peanut butter ones.

Ellie (Grade 1): I like all the treats.

The News: Do you prefer tricks or treats and why?

Hayden (Grade 1): Both.

Avery (Grade 2): I would rather do a pattern, like trick, treat, trick, treat.

Warren (Grade 2): Trick because I never got a trick (before).

Bonus Joke as told by Aiden (Grade 2):

Q: Why didn’t the skeleton dance?

A: Because he had no body to dance with.
