City’s power company joins Electricity Transition Hub

Medicine Hat’s municipal power distribution company will some join of the nation’s largest utility providers to study how to ramp up use of new low-carbon power, storage and grid management technology.

Federal officials announced the project with a $1.6-million grant on Friday at a renewable energy conference in Toronto. Canadian Renewable Energy Association will establish the “Electricity Transition Hub.”

The 13 members, including Medicine Hat, the Alberta Electric System Operator, Fortis and Epcor Utilities in Alberta, will share data quarterly and meet annually.

The group will “enable collaboration on clean energy deployment and grid modernization across the country,” according to a statement by Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkensen.

Also involved are Crown power providers in Saskatchewan, B.C, Manitoba, New Brunswick and Nunavut, as well as Ontario Power Generatio, and municipal providers in Toronto and Kingston.

The 13 participants will also contribute a total of $300,000 to the project’s $1.6 million budget.

Federal funding comes from the “Smart Renewables and Electrification Pathways” program.
