Business Briefs: Big Marble signs long-term contract with Pik’n’Pak Produce group

Big Marble Greenhouse has announced it has inked a five-year marketing deal with central Alberta growers that comprise “Pik’n’Pak Produce.”

Terms were not disclosed but Big Marble VP of sales and marketing Jonathon Schow said in a release consumers habits and the wholesale market are continuously changing.

“Sustainability is top of mind across our country, and competition is constantly growing,” said the release.

“To keep pace with these changes, it takes a great deal of strategic planning, forward thinking and growth. The Pik’n’Pak group are excellent growers with excellent expansion plans in the future.”

Three companies in Pik’N’Pak are based around Lacombe and Gull Lake, Sask. and currently have 50 acres of greenhouse space along with packaging facilities.

The deal brings total production space to about 250 acres.

Pik’n’Pak partner Eric Doef said “this collaboration of legacy growing brands will do well to protect and enhance our growing provincial industry.”

Methanex Safety Award

Methanex has been named the “Safest Company” in the Canadian chemistry industry by a national Canadian Occupational Safety magazine.

The global methanol producer, which is based in Vancouver and has major plant site in Medicine Hat, received the award Monday at a gala along with 19 other companies in different sectors.

The awards are based on health and safety programs in place and specific records of accidents.

“Safety is critical across our business at Methanex, and our No. 1 priority is ensuring that each team member gets home safely every day,” said CEO John Floren in a statement.

Also recognized in the chemistry sector was BASF with an award of excellence. The Alberta Construction Association was honoured as top safety industry provider.
