Hatter Linda Gove is being recognized for her long-standing involvement in Girl Guides of Canada with Medicine Hat Police Service’s Be the Change Award.

Created in honour of International Women’s Day, the award is given monthly to a community member who has worked to improve the lives of women and girls locally, while advancing gender equality and inspiring leadership among women.

A volunteer of more than 40 years, Gove has served in a variety of roles within local Girl Guide units, including as a unit guider, commissioner and public relations advisor.

As well as hosting regular unit meetings, assisting in trips – both in and around Medicine Hat and to national or international destinations – and helping facilitate socialization, Gove also helps to teach the young women she volunteers self-confidence and leadership skills.

Gove says she most enjoys connecting with unit members – who range in age from five to 17 years – and hopes she can be a mentor for them as they grow and discover the world.

As well as her involvement in Girl Guides, Gove has also volunteered with numerous local sports clubs and organizations, including hockey, in-line hockey, figure skating and karate, and has also been a volunteer with Medicine Hat’s air cadets.

Gove says she is proud for her work to be recognized with the Be the Change Award and hopes it may inspire other women to dedicate time to community service.
