The Moose Recreation Centre and arena will reopen Monday, according to a city release, after a delay last month following extensive renovations.

The concrete slab, boards and chiller plant were replaced this summer after council dedicated $1.2 million for the construction project in a budget update late last year. As well, an additional $900,000 in operation funding was added for the arena and the Crestwood Rec Centre, which were both left closed after health restrictions were lifted in 2021.

More recently, officials said recommissioning the arena was taking longer than expected as the concrete base of the skating surface cured.

“The rink required some pretty substantial renovations in order to safely reopen to the public,” said James Will, director of parks and recreation. “We can’t wait to have our local skaters take to the ice once more.”

Washrooms

A pilot project to supply port-a-potties at Towne Square downtown will wind up Monday, according to a city release.

“The desire for a public washroom in the downtown area has been widely recognized by both city administration and the public,” it read. “The city will continue to explore appropriate and sustainable public washroom solutions for the downtown area.”

Most other public restrooms in city parks are now closed and winterized, the release continues.

Facilities will remain open in Police Point Park, the Kin Coulee Toboggan Hill, Southview Community Park, Strathcona Island Park, the Strathcona boat launch, Echo Dale boat lake and campground, and portable toilets will remain at WestVue and Saratoga off-leash areas.
