True North K9 Compound is putting the ‘fun’ in ‘fundraiser’ with its Hocus Pocus, Woof Put a Spell on You event taking place Oct. 22.

Geared toward families with children aged 3-12, the event features a variety of activities including Halloween-themed games, an outdoor movie screening of Casper and a haunted maze. There will also be a pre-carved pumpkin judging competition and treasure chest contest, where families compete to open the chest and claim the pirate’s treasure (a $350 Safeway gift card).

Spooky snacks, such as glowing cotton candy and non-alcoholic witches’ brew, will be available throughout the day, with several local food trucks joining the party from 4:30-6:30 p.m.

As well as offering families a chance to enjoy the spirit of Halloween, the event also encourages the spirit of giving back, as all proceeds raised will be donated to five local animal rescue and support organizations: Bunny Run Rabbit Rescue, Southern Alberta Humane Society, Medicine Hat SPCA, Persian Dreams and Canine Themes Rescue Society and Furry Friends Food Foundation.

“Ever since we’ve been in business, one of our focuses is to give back to the community as well as to the local animal rescue shelters,” Jodi Leupold of True North K9 Compound said. “For kids, no matter what holiday season it is, they’re always so excited. (And) for the animal rescues, everybody is struggling, so we just want to help them out.”

While the event is in support of animals, pets are not welcome.

The event runs from 3-9 p.m. at True North K9 Compound located at 1516 Walters Way NW, with the movie beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and/or blankets. Organizers also invite attendees to come dressed in costume.

Tickets can be purchased on Eventbrite.ca or at the door.
