Big fines for texting

RCMP in Alberta are warning about the dangers of distracted driving by noting they have now issued 13 distracted driving tickets to a single, unnamed individual over the last 11 years, racking up about $7,600 in fines.

In traffic court in Airdrie this week, the 40-year-old man was issued a $2,000 fine, a $300 surcharge and three demerit points.

Driving while using a cell phone or computer became a ticketable offence in Alberta on Sept. 1, 2011. Authorities state that distracted driving plays a part in 20 per cent of all traffic accidents.
