Prairie Wind Dancers bringing square dance back to the Hat

By Medicine Hat News on September 24, 2022.

Grab a pardner, square dancing is coming back to the Hat.

The Prairie Wind Dancers will be celebrating their return to the floor on Oct. 21 at St. Barnabas Hall, and are welcoming dancers new and old to join in on the fun.

“Since we’ve been shut down for so long, there’s only about one square of dancers left from pre-COVID, so hopefully the evening will be teaching new dancers how to square dance,” said Gerald Aitken with the Prairie Wind Dancers. “It was closed down for two years due to COVID, there was no way to keep it active.”

Aitken says the two hours are mostly spent learning and dancing, but there are scheduled breaks and plenty of time to get to know your fellow dancers.

“Typically, you’ll dance for about 15 minutes, there will be a short break, then dance again for another 15 until the two hours is pretty much used up. Then there will be socializing for about another half-hour.”

Dance nights will be held weekly from 7-9 p.m. at St. Barnabas Hall. Anyone looking for more information, or to join the Prairie Wind Dancers, can contact Better Ann Fieldberg at 403-666-3929 or ladydog1971@hotmail.com.
