SaskPower has identified two potential sites for small-scale, modular nuclear reactor development, including one on Lake Diefenbaker.

Elbow and Estevan will be the focus of feasibility studies toward hosting modular reactors which the province has stated could be built after a final decision in made in 2029.

It, along with Alberta and New Brunswick governments, have promoted the technologies potential to provide stable, zero-emissions power for either baseload or in remote locations.

“To keep nuclear power an option for Saskatchewan, significant planning and regulatory work must be done now – and a necessary step to advance this regulatory work is to identify and select a location to potentially host an SMR,” according to a release from the Crown electricity provider.

Elbow is located about two hours northeast of Swift Current. Both sides are located near existing hydro electric or former coal plants, including the Boundary Dam near Estevan.
