Medicine Hat’s interim city manager has been named to a new task force on skills training in the province’s college and universities.

Glenn Feltham will be vice-chair of the group that was announced on Tuesday by Premier Jason Kenney. It has a three-year mandate to advise the ministry of advanced education on meeting skills demand from industry.

“I’ve been involved in the broader skills agenda, provincially and nationally… so when I was invited I thought it would be good to hopefully influence the directions we take,” he told the News on Monday. “I love education, love skills and love thinking about what the world can become.”

Feltham was the president of the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology from 2011 to 2019, and has also served as an interim president of Grande Prairie Regional College.

He was named interim city manager in Medicine Hat in May, and is expected to serve here until a permanent manager is hired later this year.

He told the News the appointment would likely not interfere with local duties.

The task force is made up of 11 advisers and will be chaired by Dennis Perrin, the Alberta and Prairie head of the Christian Labour Association of Canada, and representatives from the Building Trades of Alberta and various industry associations.

The formation of the group is a recommendation of the “Alberta 2030: Building Skills for Jobs” report.
