Members of the South East Alberta Fetal Alcohol Network are hoping to connect with the community with an FASD Awareness Day barbecue, noon to 2 p.m. today at Maple Avenue ACE Hardware.
The public barbecue aims to create a comfortable space for information sharing and conversation generation on FASD – a number of physical and developmental conditions affecting individuals whose mothers’ drank alcohol during pregnancy.
“We want to raise awareness (and) increase understanding in the community,” said SEAFAN co-ordinator Myrna Stark. “The network is there to support individuals who might need some help and (we’re) not there to blame or shame.”
As well as the barbecue, SEAFAN hosted a full-day FASD training session at the Medicine Hat Lodge on Thursday. The Saamis Tepee has also been lit in red since Sunday in recognition of FASD Awareness Day.
