A portion of Spencer Street was closed Thursday morning as emergency service personnel responded to a house fire in the 600 block.
Fire, police and EMS vehicles blocked street access from Third Avenue SE to Dunmore Road as firefighters from all three of the city’s stations worked to put out the blaze, first reported at approximately 9:30 a.m.
“We had on-scene reports of flame and smoke (coming from a) single-family dwelling structure,” deputy chief Chad Eakins told the News on-site. “And reports of somebody inside but we’ve cleared it out; there is nobody inside. The house is actually vacant.”
Crews were able to extinguish the fire shortly after arrival, but remained on scene for the next hour, ensuring no potential for hot-spot re-ignition.
“The investigator on scene is going to take over once we get everything cleared off,” said Eakins, who, at the time, could provide no further details about the cause or origin.
The structure was still standing following the fire. The extent of the damage is currently unknown.
