The Moose Recreation Centre is scheduled to open as planned in September after repairs were approved earlier this year and a new ice slab poured earlier this month.

The rink located on the Southwest Hill was the only city arena to remain closed after pandemic restrictions on recreation facilities were lifted in early 2021. At the time, administrators stated the deteriorated slab presented dangers, while attendance levels and demand for ice time didn’t warrant its reopening under stringent and costly health protocols.

Eventually, the rink was slated for closure for last winter season as staff examined the cost-benefit ratio related to replacing the late 1970s-vintage arena with new construction in a potential amalgamation plan.

In January however, newly elected city council members approved $1.2 million in repair work to proceed while a wider facilities replacement plan was drawn up.

Last week’s meeting of the utility and infrastructure committee heard the replacement of the chiller unit was complete and the slab was still in curing stages, but would be available when the winter sports season began.
