New vet clinic opens in Medicine Hat

Even though they are still putting some finishing touches on things, with some work still being done in the back, and the debit machines finally arriving on Wednesday, the Horizon Vet Clinic officially opened their doors on Monday at 8 a.m.

Quinn Schotanus, a technician at the clinic, graduated from NAIT in 2020. She did her practicum at Crossroads Animal Hospital and continued working there for another year and a half before taking a three month break and moving over to Horizon.

Dr. Layne Manson and Dr. Clayton Brandt are the two vets at the clinic. Both vets were at Crossroads and have now opened their own independent clinic.

The clinic put out a radio ad to let people know they were opening on Monday.

“We didn’t have any clients, we started completely fresh. Since we opened at 8 a.m. on Monday we have over 150 clients in our book at this point. Two phone lines lit up and were ready to go at 8 a.m. on Monday, so people were waiting by the phone to call,” said Schotanus.

Only cats and dogs are being seen at the clinic. With one part-time and two full-time technicians, two receptionists plus the two vets working at the clinic, they are fully staffed. Although, as Schotanus pointed out, “I hesitate to say full staffed at any veterinary clinic because you can always use more people. We are hoping to eventually start growing once we get the ball rolling.”

Currently, Horizon is without a sign.

“Our sign guy has done an amazing job on it,” said Schotanus, “It looks fantastic. We know it exists and ideally it should be here by the end of next week or the week after. We are hoping for next week.”
