Correction to Friday fees story

By Medicine Hat News on August 13, 2022.

A story in Friday’s paper incorrectly suggested the city’s Corporate Services Committee approved dishonourable payment and tax certificate and information fee increases, and the increases would be raised beginning in the 2023 calendar year. In actuality, fee increases must be heard by and approved by city council before implementation. The committee only heard fee increase recommendations, voiced support for the recommendations and voted to refer to city council.

The story also misstated tax and certificate fee increases were not publicly disclosed. Increases, in fact, were publicly provided in the committee meeting agenda. Mutual tax certificate fees – currently set at $40.50 – will see no increase in 2023, but will increase to $42 in 2024. E-service tax certificates – currently set at $34 – will be raised to $35 in 2023 and $36.50 in 2024. Written assessment information – currently set at $45 – will increase to $52.50 in 2023 and $54.50 in 2024. Registration of a Tax Arrears Notification fees – now $82 – will see the most significant increase to $100 in 2023 and $104 in 2024. Lastly, mortgage administration fees – now $18 per tax account – will become $24.50 in 2023 and $25.50 in 2024.
