The sights! The sounds! The smells! The Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede grounds are alive and bustling once again with the return of the annual summer event.

With so much to see and do, the News had difficulty choosing what to try first when the Stampede officially opened Wednesday. The decision was made easily however, when we caught a whiff of fried dough mixed with cinnamon sugar. To the food vendors!

Primarily stationed in an ‘L’ shape running from the centre of the midway to the grandstand and along the side of the Drill Hall, this year’s food vendors offer wide variety of treats and eats.

Classic carnival foods comprise a majority of the selection and are primarily located between the midway and grandstand. Corn dogs, French fries, mini doughnuts, cotton candy, popcorn, candy apples and Bavarian nuts are just a few of the fan favourites available.

Local favourites are also on display, with the return of several Medicine Hat food vendors, such as the Lion’s Club Stampede grill; Kona Ice; Crust Pizza; the Sausage Shack; Fryer Tucks, which is operating food trucks as well as the Hungry Horseman concession; and more.

While adventurous eaters don’t have as wide a selection as they may at larger stampedes, there are a few unique food items available, such as; truffle poutine (midway vendor); kimchi fries (Happy Fish Catering food truck); breakfast poutine (Hungry Horseman); elephant ear supreme (Fryer Tuck’s); lolly waffles (Tea Pro); Korean beef bulgolgi tacos (Happy Fish Catering); honeydew bubble tea (Tea Pro); and ‘Fireball’ sno kones (Kona Ice), a perfect treat for anyone who braves the ‘Fireball’ midway ride, which made its MHE&S debut Wednesday.

Prices vary, but almost all items are less than $15.
