Federal funds will pay for half of regional rail line upgrades in south and western Saskatchewan via the National Trade Corridor strategy.

Major grade stabilization project near Eston Sask., northeast of Leader, will see Ottawa pay half the $27-million project near the interchange of the Last Mountain Railway and Canadian Pacific mainline.

A new “pre-interchange yard” near Assiniboia, Sask. will receive $1.6 million to increase operating capacity on the Great Western Railway short line.

Near Regina, a $2.2-million grant will install 12,000 feet of additional track to the Southern Railroad and CP interchange at Lajord, Sask., with private-sector partner Purely Foods Canada also contributing.

A further $1 million will be spent to relocate rail crossings in Regina.

Separately in June, the Saskatchewan government announced its capital support program for the province’s 13 short lines would provide $530,000 this year for maintenance and upgrades, including $43,100 for the Great Sandhills Railway.
